Memorial service for J. Howard Mock is July 20
July 3, 2024 - by Kim Delker
A memorial service for John (J.) Howard Mock, a prominent local civil engineer and alumnus of the Gerald May Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering, will be held at 10 a.m. July 20 at Heights Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
Mock, who was born in Colorado, died June 5. He grew up in both Colorado and New Mexico. Along with his father, Henry, and brother Joe established Mock Homes. He graduated from Fountain High School in Colorado, then attended Colorado School of Mines. Since that school did not offer civil engineering at the time, Mock returned to Albuquerque to attend UNM, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering in 1964 and later an executive MBA from the Anderson School of Management.
He joined the Jaynes Corporation in in 1970, where he grew the company over the years to one of the largest commercial construction companies in the southwest region with offices in multiple states.
He also had a distinguished legacy with Associated General Contractors, being elected as national president of AGC of America in 1997. In addition, he chaired the AGC/UNM Endowed Chair in Construction Management and Engineering Advisory Committee in the Department of Civil Engineering.
He is honored in the Halls of Fame of the UNM Robert O. Anderson School of Management and as a distinguished alumni of the UNM School of Engineering in 2006. An AGC scholarship at UNM bears his name.
