Drew Baird, who earned a Ph.D. in civil engineering from UNM in 2004, received the 2023 Arid Lands Hydraulic Engineering Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers Environmental and Water Resources Institute. It was awarded at the 2023 World Environmental and Water Resources Congress in Henderson, Nev., earlier this year.
The award is given for distinguished contributions to river restoration, sediment transport analysis, river and bank stabilization, and reservoir sedimentation in the ephemeral streams in the Western U.S. arid and semi-arid environment.
Baird has had a 40-year career at the Bureau of Reclamation.
