Master's Student James Fluke Receives NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program Award
March 30, 2017
James graduated with an Outstanding Senior Student Award from the UNM Civil Engineering department undergraduate program in 2016 and continued into a master’s program in Civil Engineering working with Dr. Gonzalez-Pinzon, while holding an internship with the Albuquerque Metropolitan Arroyo Flood Control Authority. His early research work, focused on understanding sources of fecal contamination indicators in the Rio Grande near Albuquerque, received a seed grant from the New Mexico Water Resources Research Institute (NMWRRI) during 2016 and established the basis of the more holistic research proposal to the NSF GRFP.
James’s research interests are in contaminant and sediment transport, from a hydraulic and hydrologic perspective, and in understanding key interactions between resource management and public policy. He plans to use his fellowship support to continue to a PhD program working with Dr. Gonzalez-Pinzon and aspires to advance our understanding of emergent and changing issues affecting surface waters and their management.
