Sergio Lozoya, a second-year master’s candidate in UNM’s Community and Regional Planning Department, presented his CREST-funded research on Bernalillo County’s There Is No Poop Fairy campaign at the Emerging Researchers National Conference in Washington D.C. His presentation, entitled Have You Seen The Poop Fairy?, discussed preliminary survey results, which suggest the campaign has been effective in positively influencing the behavior of dog owners within the Albuquerque/Bernalillo County study area. His presentation won first place in the general category of Science and Mathematics Education and Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences.
The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the National Science Foundation (NSF) host the Emerging Researchers National Conference (ERN) in STEM in February every year for graduate and undergraduate researchers to present their NSF-funded research. There are two types of presentations, oral and poster, in several STEM categories. Graduate student participants give a 10-minute oral presentation with a five-minute Q&A portion at the end, while undergraduates give a gallery style presentation, in which judges walk from poster to poster to listen to the presenters speak about their work. The 2019 ERN Conference was held Feb 21-23 in Washington, D.C.
